This #GoodNewsFriday we hear how Charlotte Straker House encouraged 60% of staff to get their flub jab this winter with a creative incentive.
A creative, staff-led initiative has helped boost flu vaccination uptake to an impressive 60% across the Charlotte Straker House team this winter.
To encourage staff to protect themselves and others this winter, the care home launched a flu jab raffle, giving everyone who received the vaccine the chance to win a luxury hamper. While the raffle added a fun incentive, many staff were already motivated by a strong understanding of the importance of flu vaccination. It’s not just about their own health, but also about protecting colleagues, residents, and families.
The winning ticket belonged to care assistant Lindsey who was able to enjoy the luxury hamper.
Charlotte Straker House’s uptake of the flu jab shows that creative approaches combined with a caring team ethos can drive real impact.

We鈥檙e absolutely thrilled with the uptake this year. Our staff really stepped up to protect themselves, their colleagues, and the people we care for. This raffle was a fun way to recognise that effort, and I鈥檓 so proud of everyone who took part.
The organisation is now continuing efforts to support and encourage the remaining 40% of staff to consider the vaccination this winter - whether through further education, support with access, or one-to-one conversations.
Why the flu jab matters for care staff:
- Protects people supported: vaccinated staff help prevent the spread of flu, especially among vulnerable people supported.
- Keeping services running: fewer staff absences mean better continuity of care during the busy winter season.
Social care providers should offer flu vaccination to all staff directly involved in delivering care, as part of their occupational health responsibilities. Frontline workers in a social care setting without an employer-led occupational health scheme can access the flu vaccine through the NHS free of charge. Individuals may also be eligible for a free flu vaccination based on individual circumstances.
